NORTH OF OSLO
We drive through the fertile farmland of Romerike, and along the shores of Norway’s largest lake Mjøsa, to the town of Hamar. We make a short stop on the way at Gjerdrum secondary school (arch. Kristin Jarmund 2009), and at Eidsvoll manor, a national monument where the Norwegian Constitution was made in 1814.
Situated by lake Mjøsa, Hamar is the main town of Hedmark district. In recent years, it has become an important destination for architectural enthusiasts. We will visit::
- Hedmarksmuseet, regional museum where the main structure is built around the ruins of the medieval bishop’s palace. A major work by Norway’s only Pritzker Prize winning architect Sverre Fehn, this example of his “poetic modernism” was developed over a long period of time, from 1967 to 1979, with later additions. Inside visit.
- Protective structure for Hamar cathedral ruin, by arch. Lund & Slaatto 1998. Inside visit.
- Hamar city hall, arch. Snøhetta 2002.
- Hamar cultural center, arch. Tegnestuen Vandkunsten 2014.
- The Viking Ship”, speed skating hall for the 1994 Winter Olympic Games, arch. Niels Torp 1992.
Lunch in Hamar.
Return to Oslo. If time allows, a short stop at Oslo Airport Gardermoen, arch. Aviaplan 1998, for a look at the main departure hall.
