Norway, architectural landmarks are spread throughout the length of the land,
and most tours outside Oslo concentrate on one region, or make a cross-section of
the country. Normal duration is 3-5 days. Road transport is most common, but when
possible, high-speed ferries and coastal steamers are used to add to the experience,
and Norway's extensive domestic airport network gives quick access to many
remote towns and regions. Some examples:
| | Stavanger
and the south west: Stavanger, capital of the oil industry, has developed
a strong regional architecture in recent years. In addition, the Karmøy
Fishing Museum and the Kvitsøy Maritime Traffic Centre are good reasons
to cross the Bokna fjord. | The
north west: Museum projects by Sverre Fehn against a background of spectacular
fjords and glaciers, mountain crossings and stave churches, the ocean panoramas
of Stadlandet peninsula, rounded off by a visit to the Jugend-style city of
Ålesund. | North
of the circle: Far beyond the Arctic Circle, the Polar city Tromsø
offers bold new architecture, including the landmark Ishavskatedralen church
and Polaria Arctic Centre. The Sami Parliament building in Karasjok is a forceful
expression of the Lappish culture, and on the way lie the World Heritage-listed
rock carvings in Alta. |
